Zzzzzzz….anyone else having trouble sleeping these nights? Sheets on, sheets off; toss, turn; turn toss; too hot; too cold?? Ireland’s beds are certainly getting a workout!
The thing is: our bodies don’t simply like to sleep – they need adequate sleep to function effectively. Those who sleep better, slim better, as our metabolism needs time to work through the day’s digestion, and to put in a strong shift the following day. This one’s a scientific fact: at least seven hours’ slumber each night improves your shot at losing weight. And, slimming while we sleep sounds fantastic, right?
Here’s six quick (and potent) tips to help you drift away….
A little nibble before bed isn’t banned, but be careful what you choose. Anything spicy, heavy or citrusy may not be a good plan, as these foods are trickier to digest. Better late-nighters include a handful of almonds, a bowl of low-cal yogurt with fresh fruits or – if it’s movie night – some homemade popcorn.
Start by making post-5pm a coffee-free zone. A cup during your day is unlikely to disturb your sleep pattern, but a caffeine kick in the evening almost certainly will. Chamomile and lavender teas will send you to the land of nod in no time.
Extensive studies have proven that flashing lights in your bedroom do not aid restful sleep. That means tvs, iPhones and anything else electrical that doesn’t need to be powered on should not enter your sleeping space. Let’s be straight: unless you’re a doctor, you don’t need a phone under your pillow, pinging away, do you?
The more exposure you have to air and sunlight during waking hours, the greater the chance your body has at powering down when it’s time for shuteye. Take every opportunity you have to leave your desk, or to take the kids out of the house. A dull day indoors does not lead to feelgood zzzzs!

Rather than fretting about work or family, the to-do list that never gets done, or the relationship that needs the kiss of life, try giving your head a holiday by indulging in a spell of nightdreaming instead. Start with a place (desert island?), person (Ryan Gosling?), and go from there… it’s a child-like activity we somehow lost along the way!
