My weight had been creeping up during the lockdown in 2020, and then in 2021, my husband became very unwell and suffered some complications after open heart surgery. That was a really difficult time and I was comfort eating throughout it all. I was always a bit of a yo-yo dieter and my weight would always go up and down. My sons were doing their junior and leaving cert exams, too, so there was a lot going on at home and I was trying to balance work and everything and was just mindlessly eating and the weight kept creeping up and up and up. I got to a stage where I was breathless and my joints were aching and I became worried about something happening to me – I knew my family needed me so that was the motivation to get me to do something about it and I joined Unislim on the 1st of June 2022. My mum encouraged me to go and she came with me and we did it together, which was so helpful.
The Unislim plan was so simple to follow, which I really needed given all that was going on in my life. It’s all about balance and having your three meals and two snacks. It’s not complicated, and I was able to effortlessly incorporate the plan into my life. There’s no cutting out carbs or major sacrifices to be made.
I didn’t do much exercise in the beginning but now I walk about 5km five days a week, which really does speed up your weight loss. Now, when my son is at football training, I’ll go for a walk and I would also walk to work. I’ve just incorporated that into my everyday life and it’s great to get out in the fresh air and allow your mind to wander.
Once I lost the weight, there was a noticeable difference in my energy levels and I was no longer getting winded going up a flight of stairs, carrying all that weight around with me. I’m a totally different person now. Even a small amount of weight loss can make a massive difference in your life.
It took a full year to get to my happy weight and I know I couldn’t have done it on my own – I had tried that before and also tried other programmes, but the Unislim plan was different. I made a promise to myself that I would stick with it and no matter how long it took to reach my goal, I would not give up.
Andrea is such an amazing leader. Even when I might have had a challenging week, she would make facing the scales so much easier. During the week, she’d send recipes and messages of encouragement to keep you motivated and I really couldn’t have reached my goal without her support.
The whole point of the Balance Plan, I think, is that if you slip up or make a bad decision, you just get straight back on the plan the next day. You just park it and move on. It’s about finding that balance in your life and in the foods you eat. It’s really important to go to your class and stay for your class after the weigh-in … and not to give up.
In the past, I’ve struggled to maintain a healthy weight, so that’s what I’m focused on now. So I’ll keep going to class and sticking with it. This is for life, that’s the way I see it, and Unislim will continue to help me maintain my weight.
