The day I joined Unislim, I had gotten to a stage where I just really wanted to do something totally for me. I’ve a long history with weight, and I knew if I could just get the motivation up, find an eating plan that I could stick to, and get good support, I’d get where I wanted – for me, and for my health.
A friend had joined Unislim, and after a few weeks, I could see the positive effects it was having on her. She’d tell me of all the lovely food she was eating, and how easy it was to fit the plan into everyday life. I figured, if she could do it, so could I. I joined a meeting nearby, and decided that this was it – I was on a mission. After joining, I quickly realised where I had been going wrong.
My main trouble spot was that I was a night-time eater. I work in a chipper too – so that really didn’t help. I used to go to work hungry and eat my meals there, so after joining Unislim, I really went back to basics. I started eating a breakfast, a lunch, preparing a dinner and bringing it to work with me. If I wasn’t hungry, I wouldn’t be tempted to opt for fast food. I also started becoming more aware of my portions and started drinking more water. And I began enjoying exercise. I love the variety in the meals I eat now.
I love trying new recipes and tasting new foods – something I didn’t do before. I used to be a creature of habit, but now I see that variety really is the spice of life. At my meeting, I get fantastic tips on how to transform my favourite meals with a healthy twist, so I never miss out or have to say no.
My top recipes are the Unislim Italian tomato soup and their butternut squash soup. – they are so delicious and filling. My comfort meal would be homemade chicken goujons with wedges. As for the treats, I still enjoy a little of what I fancy. The support I get from my Unislim leader, Kathy, and all the other members helps me stay on track. I love the buzz of the meetings and the laugh I have with all the members –we are together on this journey.
There is something fantastic about knowing that you are never alone. My top tips would be: always stay for a meeting, no matter how good or bad a week you have had – you will leave feeling like you can take on the world. I always stay behind after the talk, have a cuppa and chat to the new members. Plan your meals as much as you can. If I have a busy week, I’ll cook dinners in the mornings, when I have a little time to myself. It’s not at all difficult; it’s just a case of getting into the mindset.
