5 Steps to a flourishing life

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to live your life to the full? Some people just know how to do it. Their lives seem full of laughter, bursting enthusiasm, bundles of energy to do the things they love. They exude happiness, confidence and love or put simply: they live a flourishing life. Psychological flourishing is not something we have, rather something we do.

Martin Seligman, a psychologist from the University of Pennsylvania came up with five simple steps; helping us live a flourishing life.

Step 1: Positive Emotions

It’s the small things in life that matter. The pleasure of having a cup of tea at the end of a busy day; laughing uncontrollably at a lame joke our friend told us, savoring our favorite meal or feeling grateful to a stranger for  picking up the glasses you dropped while rooting for your bus ticket. To live a flourishing life, we need to catch pleasurable moments every day and make sure we experience more positive than negative emotions.

Step 2: Engagement

Have you ever lost yourself doing something exciting? Be it cooking a fancy meal for a bunch of friends, training ferociously for your first marathon or solving a complicated crossword. When we use our skill and challenge ourselves with it, we engage fully with what we do. The more moments of engagement we bring into our lives, the more we flourish.

Step 3: Positive Relationship

Chats, hugs and kisses are some of the gifts our friends offer us every day. We are 30 times more likely to laugh when in a company of people than when we’re on our own. Having support network is crucial for a flourishing life. So go on, call that friend now to boost your well-being.

Step 4: Meaning

‘I want to put a dent in the universe’ is Steve Jobs’ famous line that guided his flourishing life. We can find our meaning in the faces of our children, grateful tears of people we helped and smiles of those we inspired. How will you put a dent in your world today?

Step 5: Accomplishments

Every step we take that brings us closer to our healthier self is an achievement. It may be as simple as a craving you overcame or a pound you lost. Celebrate your achievements with people you love, work and bump into in the waiting room and who are willing to listen. Be proud of each step. Flourish!
